Selected Projects

Bilingual Scholarship: I co-founded a scholarship for bilingual students in Texas with a good friend of mine who is an ESL teacher. It literally began as a conversation about wanting to do something more direct to make a tangible difference in people’s lives and grew from there. In 2011 we awarded two scholarships and it is probably the project that I am most proud of. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to the scholarship recipients.

Quartier par Quartier is a model for needs assessment and capacity reporting by Haitians to prioritize and locate the areas of greatest needs during the recovery and redevelopment phases in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. The project leveraged the power of the Haitian diaspora to collect fine scale demographic and needs data created by the affected population and was entirely grassroots (meaning we had no funding). It was one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. In this talk I gave a frank assessment of what worked and what didn’t: something I wish I saw more of.

I designed this poster about Quartier par Quarter for an ASPRS Conference in 2010. Before I hung the poster I singed the bottom of it to emphasize the sense of urgency. Maps should clearly communicate data: they should also be visually compelling. It only makes sense, then, to follow the same rules when you talk about maps and geographic data. The Quartier par Quartier logo was designed pro bono by Dave McClinton
